Citric Acid 1KG | Plant-Based Descaler for a Low-Tox Home
If you live somewhere with hard water, citric acid will become your best friend. This plant-based, biodegradable powder breaks down limescale, mineral deposits, rust, and soap scum without any harsh chemicals. It's gentle enough to use around your whānau, and powerful enough to tackle the build-up that makes kettles fur, washing machines smell, and showerheads clog.
Citric acid works by binding to the hard minerals in water and dissolving them so they rinse away cleanly. It also neutralises odours and tackles mould, making it one of the most hardworking ingredients you can keep in your cleaning kit.
What Citric Acid Can Do
Descaling and limescale removal: kettles, coffee makers, showerheads, shower glass, and tapware. Deep cleaning washing machines and dishwashers to remove mineral build-up and odours. Removing rust stains and hard water marks from sinks, basins, and tiles. Naturally killing germs and bacteria without synthetic disinfectants. Freshening and deodorising kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry.
DIY Cleaning Recipes
Washing Machine Deep Clean Start by cleaning your filters with your Natural Cleaning Spray or Natural Cleaning Paste and removing the agitator if applicable. Then run a long, hot empty cycle with: 6 tbsp Citric Acid + 6 tbsp Washing Soda Ash for top loaders 3 tbsp Citric Acid + 3 tbsp Washing Soda Ash for front loaders
Dishwasher Descale Clean the filter and wipe down the seals with your Natural Cleaning Spray, then add 3 tbsp Citric Acid and 3 tbsp Washing Soda Ash to the powder dispenser. Toss in a couple of used lemons for extra freshness if you like, then run a long, hot empty cycle to dissolve scale and lift odours.
All-Purpose Descaling Spray Combine 1 cup of warm water with 1 tbsp of Citric Acid in a reused spray bottle. Shake to dissolve, then spray directly onto limescale build-up on kettles, coffee makers, showerheads, and shower glass.
About Citric Acid
Citric acid is a naturally occurring weak acid with a pH of around 2.2 to 2.5 in concentrated form. When diluted, it settles around pH 3 to 4, making it effective without being harsh. It's safe, biodegradable, and a staple ingredient for anyone building a low-tox cleaning routine.
Storage: Keep in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place. Not for consumption.
